Bertha Jane (Williams) Hammonds, 82 of Akron, Ohio departed this life Friday, January 1, 2016 at her home. Mrs. Hammonds was born July 25, 1933 in Gena, Louisiana to James and Josephine Williams.
Bertha, fondly known as “Janie”, and her family relocated to Akron, Ohio in 1939. She attended Akron public schools and graduated from East High School.
Janie met and married the love of her life, the late Samuel I. Hammonds. To this union were born two daughters, Renee and Desiree. She worked for O’Neil’s Department Store.
Janie was preceded in death by her parents, James and Josephine Williams and brothers Phil, Ted, John W Dunkley and Arthur Dell Williams; sisters Mary Dunkley and Leanna Killins; daughter, Desiree Reeves. She leaves to cherish his memory her beloved daughter Renee (Reginald) Parnell; son-in-law Bernie Reeves, granddaughter Maya Desiree Hammonds (Dwayne) all of Akron, Ohio and grandson Devin Ray (Tanisha) Meadows, great grandchildren Kynnedi, Jeremiah, and Daylen all of Newport News, VA; her sister Bessie Jordan (Aaron – deceased): sister-in-law’s, Doretta Dunkley, Anna Williams all of Akron, Ohio, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, friends and loyal friend and caregivers, Pamela “Pam” Clark and Charlene Kemp-Queener.
